West Byfleet Care Home and Local Care Provider Join Forces

Growth Team at West Hall

We are pleased to announce that one of our Growth Team’s projects is being supported by Anchor West Hall care home.

The Growth Team, a group of people who are taught and supported by Surrey Choices to carry out practical gardening, landscaping and maintenance work across the local countryside and its public spaces, have now been invited by Anchor West Hall to work in the grounds of the listed manor house in West Byfleet. Accent Housing & Surrey Choices

Over the past few months, Surrey Choices has been working with Accent Housing Association to provide assistance to their residents to maintain their gardens. This partnership formed when Accent had to withdraw the assisting gardening service they used to offer to some of their elderly and vulnerable residents.

Surrey Choices provide a range of support services dedicated to improving independence, confidence and life skills of people with a range of disabilities and support needs in their local community. (more…)

Prestigious award presented to disability employment specialist

A Surrey Choices employee has received the highest honour from the supported employment sector after being awarded the national 2017 Practitioner of the Year Award.

Carolyn Tucker supports people with a wide range of disabilities by helping them to find employment opportunities with local employers. (more…)

Rebound Therapy Team scoop Community Heroes Award


It’s been a great month here at Surrey Choices with plenty of awards to shout about. In particular, this week we are celebrating after winning a prestigious award at the BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards.

Winners in the category of Sport, our Rebound Therapy team impressed the judges with their dedication and contribution to local sporting life. Their coaches encourage our customers to participate in the Rebound Therapy sessions.

We are thrilled that our Growth Team were shortlisted for the Surrey Care Awards 2017.

Now in their ninth year, the Surrey Care Awards are the county’s ‘Oscars’ for those who work in the care sector. Organised by Surrey Care Association, these awards recognise the dedication of people working in a wide variety of jobs in adult social care including dementia care, caring for people in their own homes and caring for adults with learning disabilities.

BBC Surrey’s Big Bus Tour rolls into Camberley 


We are excited to announce that Surrey Choices were on BBC Radio Surrey recently as part of their big bus tour around Surrey.

The bus tour visited different parts of Surrey throughout the week and spoke with members of the local community in each location. This final show of the week was based in Camberley.


Nick Walewski storms into the Mixcloud Blues charts

We’re delighted to announce that our Direction Radio’s presenter Nick Walewski has climbed into the top 30 of the Mixcloud Blues chart.

With Mixcloud hosting thousands of shows daily, Nick’s latest show (Show 49) was placed at an impressive 29 out of 100.

Our staff, customers and volunteers enjoyed a cup of tea and a slice of cake to support popular Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning fundraiser.

As a result of the generosity of our donors, and the continued hard work from our staff and volunteers, we were able to raise an astounding £1264.35.

Our activity centres across the county will be clubbing together to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. This charity is always well supported by our customers and a firm favourite in our events calendar.

We are delighted to announce the winners of the Surrey Choices 2017 Sunflower Competition.

A number of groups and individuals took part in the competition and we were thrilled to see so many cheery sunflowers in bloom.

Music garden opens at Lockwood Activity Centre

Music Garden 2

Customers from Lockwood Activity Centre were in a celebratory mood this week when the centre’s new Music Garden officially opened.

The opening coincided with the centre’s open day event and customers were keen to demonstrate what the Music Garden has to offer.

The Music Garden is another great opportunity for our customers to be able to build skills, express themselves and improve communication through musical instruments.


Opportunities on offer for people with complex needs

Two Surrey Choices employees spoke of the opportunities on offer for children and young people with complex conditions at a Transition Training Day held at New Woking Hospice recently.

Christina Earl, Acting Operations Director, and Bobby Williams, Activity Facilitator from the Guildford Office Project, described how young people with a range of support needs can make the successful transition from children’s services to adult care if given the right opportunities. (more…)

Customers celebrate success of Rebound Therapy

Our talented customers have been presented with certificates in celebration of their commitment to trampolining during Rebound Therapy sessions at Lockwood.

Twenty individuals enrolled on the Winstrada trampolining development programme were recognised, receiving grades between levels one to six.  (more…)

The benefits of Rebound Therapy

There is no doubt that physical exercise is important for all of us and increasingly people with disabilities are embracing sports and activities because of the significant benefits it brings to their health and general well-being.

Surrey Choices provides a range of activities for the people it supports but it cites Rebound Therapy as one of its most popular activities. It introduced the therapy sessions in September 2015 and it has proved to be extremely beneficial to customers. The exercise helps to promote balance, facilitate movement, increase or decrease muscle tone and aids relaxation and sensory integration. (more…)

Support worker celebrates 30 years in the sector


One of our support workers has marked his 30th year of working in the adult and social care sector.

David Lawrence embarked on his career in 1987 when he joined Surrey County Council’s Bentley Day Services as a Support Worker, before working his way up to a Senior Activity Facilitator. (more…)

Helping people with autism to thrive in the workplace

I have been working with job seekers with autism for over 10 years and have experience of family and friends with autistic spectrum conditions and also with ADHD. I really admire many of the qualities of people on the spectrum, but also understand some of their challenges that can hold them back. Along with a colleague of mine with aspergers, we were invited to speak at a conference at Kingston University recently to talk about how employment works for people with autism. (more…)

“Jam on Bread” album cover hits all the right notes for Party in the Park


A Surrey Choices customer has won a competition to design an album cover after her work was displayed at Woking’s annual ‘Party in the Park’ event recently.

Broadcaster Mike Read and Patty Parfitt, former wife of the late Status Quo frontman Rick Parfitt, announced Debbie Taylor as the overall winner, rewarding her with £100 worth of Hobbycraft vouchers for her winning ‘Jam on Bread’ artwork.


Sparky’s Café gives confidence boost to Ben


Greater independence has been achieved for a 33 year-old man with a learning disability after seven months of working at Sparky’s Café in Guildford.

Following a successful interview and trial day Ben started work in November 2016, learning how to operate the till, interact with customers and serve a variety of hot drinks to them whilst maintaining a clean café area. (more…)
