We recently caught up with Jono from Surrey Choices’ Growth Team, for an interview led by Support Worker Richard Lilley.
Jono has been part of the Growth Team for some time, and his journey is a brilliant example of how dedication, teamwork, and the right support can help someone grow in confidence and independence.
In this interview, Jono talks about his experience with the Growth Team, his full-time role at Pirbright Barracks, and how he’s continuing to build new skills, friendships, and goals for the future.
How are you doing today, Jono?
I am doing very well today. Things are going really well at the barracks — it’s all looking good!
(Jono works full-time in paid employment at Pirbright Barracks. As one of his workdays falls on a Saturday, he joins the Growth Team on Thursdays.)
What made you want to join the Growth Team, and what were your goals at the start?
I wanted to join because I enjoy being in the environment, looking after the countryside, and helping people in the community. I also wanted to make new friends — that’s something I really love.
My goals were to live more independently, look after others, and continue improving my independence.
What new skills have you learned or developed since joining the Growth Team, and how have they helped in your daily life or work?
I’ve built my confidence and been given the opportunity to thrive. I’ve learned lots of new skills, and I really love being part of the Growth Team.
How has the support you’ve received helped you become more independent and with your job? How is life different now than before you joined?
I’m now fully employed in paid work, and my confidence and self-esteem have grown so much. I feel comfortable chatting to people and I’m very positive about life.
How has being part of the Growth Team helped you feel more connected to your local community?
Working with the Growth Team and other volunteer groups has been amazing. The Rights of Way work we do gives the community access to the countryside, which is really important.
Something else that means a lot to me is the friendships I’ve made through the team.
How have staff listened to you and supported your choices — for example, helping you decide what skills or goals to work on?
I have reviews every quarter to talk about my aims and goals, and what new skills I want to learn. I also completed a Health and Safety Machinery course with the Growth Team, which I’m really proud of.
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of all the conservation work we’ve done as a team. I’m also very proud of the work I do at Pirbright Barracks — and now that I’m there full-time, it feels like a real achievement.
What are your next goals or dreams — and how do you think your experience here will help you reach them?
With the Growth Team, my goal is to use the machinery independently.
Outside the team, I want to work towards more independent living. I’m starting to lead on tasks with the Growth Team, which is helping me make decisions for myself and take on more responsibility.
