At Surrey Choices, we believe everyone deserves the chance to live a life of their choosing. For many of the people we support, gaining independence isn’t just about learning practical tasks — it’s about building confidence, making decisions and becoming more involved in their community. One of the most effective ways to support this journey is through life skills training.
What are life skills?
Life skills are the everyday abilities that help us manage our lives with greater independence. These include things like cooking, managing money, travelling safely and communicating effectively. Life skills also encompass softer skills such as problem-solving, decision-making and social interaction—skills that help people feel more confident, capable and connected.
At Surrey Choices, we offer life skills training that’s tailored to each individual. Whether someone is learning how to plan meals, use public transport or manage their weekly budget, our support is centred on their goals, strengths and aspirations.
Building confidence and control
Gaining independence means feeling empowered to make your own choices. Life skills training provides the structure, guidance and encouragement people need to build confidence in real-life situations. It’s not about rushing through milestones, but about growing at a pace that feels right.
One customer recently told us how learning to use the bus on their own made them feel proud and free—something they never thought possible before starting travel training. These moments of personal achievement can be truly life-changing.
Everyday life skills, real-world impact
We support people across a wide range of settings: at home, in the community and at our specialist Surrey Choices Hubs. Through practical sessions and person-centred support, we help develop life skills such as:
- Cooking and nutrition
- Budgeting and handling money
- Using technology safely
- Travel training and route planning
- Social interaction and communication
These everyday skills help people feel more prepared and in control of their own lives, while also reducing reliance on others, which can help reduce the strain on council and government resources.
A pathway to broader opportunities
Life skills training can also be the first step toward bigger goals. For some, it leads to volunteering or employment opportunities. For others, it opens the door to living more independently or participating more fully in social and community life.
Our vocational learning sessions are designed to prepare people for work by helping them build routines, understand expectations and develop transferable skills that boost confidence and employability.
Supporting choice, empowering futures
At Surrey Choices, we know that independence looks different for everyone. That’s why we focus on delivering flexible, meaningful support that enables people to build the life they want—at home, at work and in the community. Life skills training is more than just a set of tasks—it’s a foundation for choice, dignity and personal growth.
