Emma Phelan is a dedicated Employment Support Specialist at Surrey Choices, where she has been making a significant impact on the lives of individuals with neurodivergence, learning difficulties and mental health conditions. As part of the Work Wise IPS Programme, Emma can help even more people find suitable paid employment that aligns with their skills and interests.
What is Work Wise?
Work Wise is a national programme funded by The Department of Work and Pensions that supports people in achieving paid work. It focuses on individuals who are motivated to work and provides them with the necessary guidance and resources to find suitable employment opportunities. Work Wise is free to access and can support people struggling with their mental health as well as those without a medical diagnosis. The programme collaborates with local businesses and organisations to create a supportive environment for job seekers.
Emma explained: “75% of our time is spent engaging with employers meaning we visit local communities, towns and look to build new relationships with employers or build on existing relationships. We collaborate with partners all across Surrey, Hampshire and Harts; we work with them by supporting their customers to find the employment support that fits their needs.”
Emma’s Journey
Emma’s passion for helping others led her to a career in this field. Inspired by her sister, a Special Educational Needs (SEN) teacher, she has been committed to making a positive difference in people’s lives, especially those who need extra support. Through her work at Work Wise, Emma has had the opportunity to learn new skills, build relationships with employers and support clients in achieving their career goals.
Success Stories
One of Emma’s proudest moments was helping a client with mental health conditions secure a self-employed role in landscape gardening. Through the programme, he finally found the confidence to find fulfilling work. This success story highlights the impact that Work Wise can have on individuals’ lives – something that Emma and the team love about their roles.
Maintaining a Healthy Work-Life Balance
Emma understands the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. She sets boundaries, prioritises her tasks, and spends quality time with her loved ones.
She said: “I keep my calendar up to date and make sure I don’t go over my weekly working hours (where possible!) I start my working day at 8am and finish at 4pm. I always ensure that once I have logged off for the day that my laptop and work phone stay upstairs in my office then I like to unwind by chilling out on the sofa, watching a good TV series with my husband and our Frenchie, Daisy.” Inspiration and Motivation
Emma finds inspiration in her colleagues and the positive impact she can make on her clients’ lives. Her dedication and motivation drive her to continue providing exceptional support.
Personal Achievements
In 2024, Emma achieved a significant personal milestone by prioritising her own needs and learning to say no when necessary.
She said: “A bad situation this year has made me realise that it is ok to put myself first sometimes, and it’s okay to say no. This may sound like a small success to some, but to me, it’s huge!“
A Bit of Fun
If Emma were famous in another life, she would be a renowned Auror from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! And when Halloween rolls around, you can find her dressed as the brilliant Hermione Granger.
Emma is such a valuable asset to Surrey Choices. She is a dedicated advocate for individuals seeking employment. Her passion, expertise and commitment to making a positive difference are truly inspiring. Thanks Emma!
