On Thursday 5 May 2016 we celebrated at the Wellbeing event the five year partnership between Surrey Choices and The University of Surrey
Surrey Choices EmployAbility have been supporting students from Freemantles School, Woking, in their second placement of the year at The University of Surrey. This is part of their supported internship course which they undertake in their final year at the school to help them on their journey towards work.
The course is designed for the students to gain work experience, develop their skills and build their confidence in a vibrant and friendly university campus. They are supported by employment specialists from Surrey Choices who job coach them throughout and assist them with finding ongoing work and vocational options at the end of their internship.
This year 10 different departments in The University of Surrey have offered placements including catering, admin, housekeeping and the library. Since the project has started 50 young people have benefitted from the scheme with 9 of these being offered paid roles within The University of Surrey whilst others have moved onto college or have found work at other employers.
To celebrate their achievements a customer, Tyler, who has previously graduated from the scheme was invited back as a guest speaker. Tyler has since gained a permanent role working within retail at The University of Surrey following a very successful placement in which he learnt valuable transferable skills to his new role. Tyler proudly talked about how much he enjoys his job and how he benefited from being job coached through the scheme by Surrey Choices EmployAbility.
Well done to all involved and we hope to continue with this successful project and partnership with the university.
