We’re Celebrating Multiple Wins at the Surrey Care Awards
J has been a member of the Surrey Choices Growth Team. When he first joined the team, he had difficulty with wearing the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) due to Sensory Overload. This meant J’s ability to take part in the practical work that the Growth Team do on a daily basis to preserve the Surrey countryside and public spaces was very limited.
Over the last few months J has slowly shown small steps in overcoming his sensory issue, and in the last few weeks he has completely transformed! This can be evidenced by his recent use of a leaf blower, for which he had to overcome the sensory issue of wearing a hard hat. His team couldn’t believe how well J had got on with using the leaf blower and were so proud of him for being able to wear the appropriate PPE to complete this task.
Richard, Activity Facilitator of the Growth Team said,
J clearly enjoys being on the Growth Team and is always looking to take part in whatever activity we are undertaking. It is therefore fantastic that he is showing such progress as it means that he can more fully participate in Growth Team activities. It is, I believe, important to note that while we will give J every opportunity to practice and learn new skills, such progress can only be made at J’s pace. Obviously we are not only interested in developing J’s skills with machines, we also take a more holistic view of the development of all the team members. With regard to J, this includes communication and we are encouraging him to speak up more for himself too.
We are so pleased for J, who in his own time was able to overcome his sensory issue and now participate in a range of tasks with the Growth Team on a day-to-day basis. We can’t wait to hear what he accomplishes next!
