Accessible sailing training
Some people from Lockwood wanted to push their boundaries and learn to sail. They visited Sailability, a service many of the people we support have used previously. It offers accessible sailing training and therapeutic classes for people with disabilities.
When it came to the day to go sailing, the group were really excited. Some were returning after the pandemic and for others it was there first time.
Colleagues who support the group explained that people of all abilities can go to Sailability as they have a hoist to get people in and out of the boats.
Outcomes
One group member really enjoys being in control of the boat when it is his turn. When asked how he felt about sailing he gave it a double thumbs up!!
Here are some of their highlights from the day. They cannot wait to go back!
“You can sit in the boat and go across the water. I can steer the boat with help.”
“I like being in the boat joining in with all the people. While you are waiting to sail, you can go on a boat ride in the bigger boat together.”
