Building confidence through the ‘Try a Train’ Initiative
A group of people from our Future Choices programme recently took part in the Try a Train initiative.
Future Choices is designed to be a solid foundation for young people as they transition to work and independent living. Try a Train is a scheme that helps people who are lacking confidence travelling by train, to visit a station and experience a train journey.
On the Day
They arrived at Staines train station and were greeted by several members of the South Western Railway team, including Community Ambassadors and Transport Police. They were given a safety talk. They each received a travelcard and information card, with details about who to call in case of an emergency.
Next, they were shown how to understand the information boards, how to know where the train would be arriving and at what time, and also how to look for delays. When on the train, the Community Ambassadors talked through the process of the train journey. They also showed the group how to download the train app on their phone, so they can keep track of live updates and further information.
“This group are working towards independence and developing their travel skills. Everyone attending had a great time and found it really helpful to have this experience.” Shabnham Shah, Employment Support Specialist.
