The Celebrating Success Awards highlight the achievements of people supported by Surrey Choices. The judging panel was comprised of disabled people and colleagues from Surrey Choices. They were impressed by how each of the winners had overcome challenges, achieved new goals and were inspired by the way they demonstrated the values at Surrey Choices.
Health and Wellbeing Award
For the Health and Wellbeing award judges were looking for individuals who had:
- Achieved one of their goals
- Learnt methods to improve their health and wellbeing or;
- Helped other to improve their health and wellbeing
Patsy was nominated by a colleague at Short Breaks Banstead. This person wanted help with managing her anxiety. She wanted to learn coping techniques to self-regulate her behaviour in challenging situations.
One hobby she has taken up is sewing. This helps to keep her mind engaged and more able to manage her anxiety. She has also learnt how to make 111 and 999 calls in the unlikely event that she faces an emergency. She now feels much more calm, safe, and secure.
The judges wanted to celebrate this person asking for help to manage her anxiety. Learning how to make an emergency phone call was a good skill to master and a fantastic achievement that continues to help this individual to stay calm.
When Patsy found out that she had won he said:
“I am proud of what I have made”
