Our Colleague Spotlight feature is on Gordon, who is a Community Support Worker. Read Gordon’s interview below to find out what he loves about his job, what he does in his free time, and much more.
How long have you worked at Surrey Choices?
I started working here in May 2022 so I have been here for around 7 months.
What convinced you that this was the job for you?
Well, when I was reading about the job, the activity side of the role was a big selling point. I am quite an active and energetic person, so going out in the community and helping people is something that I was quite interested in, and it is still one of my favourite parts of the job now.
If you could give a piece of advice, what would that advice be?
In relation to me, I would say my advice is to be persistent!
How have you found working at the Larches and the community so far?
Since 2016, I have had travel anxiety and panic attacks and I had to give up my previous job because of it. Since then, I have been working on improving my anxiety. This job has enabled me to continue working on that and slowly build up my confidence, as almost every day I am travelling either doing outreach or escorting someone home. It has been really helpful for me. In terms of the job itself, it is amazing to see the response of people when they are out in the community. Some of them can really come out of their shell. I get a lot from being able to support people to feel more independent.
What do you like doing in your free time?
Swing dancing! There is a massive community in London. I like listening to music and going to cultural things and learning about certain parts of history.
What is your proudest moment at Surrey Choices?
I suppose a general one would be knowing that I have made someone smile and really happy. I have connected with people we support at the Larches because I am so interested in them as they are me.
