Our Colleague Spotlight feature is on Laura Turner, who is our Recruitment Coordinator. Read Laura’s interview below to learn about her job, what she does in her free time, and much more.
What did you do before joining Surrey Choices?
I have always been involved in recruitment. I joined a recruitment agency after leaving college in 2002 and stayed there until 2017. I then went self-employed until coming to work for Surrey Choices in November
What is your main role as a Recruitment Coordinator?
Alongside assisting with recruiting new staff, I am also responsible for the onboarding process. I hope I can make the onboarding process as smooth (and quick!) as possible and help with any queries both applicants and colleagues may have. I also regularly update job boards and have been proactive in searching for new colleagues to join the team.
Why did you get into recruitment?
I actually interviewed for a different role at the recruitment agency and they ended up offering me a role to work with them. Since then, I have seen a lot of changes in the sector, but I have always enjoyed the challenges involved in recruiting staff and the feeling you get when someone is offered a new role! In the current job climate, it is tough to source new candidates with more roles on offer than people actually looking for work, but I am pleased to say we have several new starters lined up for the new year and will be looking at some new initiatives to ensure any roles available are (hopefully) filled quickly and with the best people.
What is something people might not know about you?
I am a keen dart player, do some occasional darts punditry and do enjoy the occasional song at karaoke!
What do you like doing outside of work?
I am lucky, I have travelled a lot over the last few years, which I have really enjoyed. Up to last year, I played netball as well as darts. I also love spending time with my family.
