Our Colleague Spotlight feature is on Paula, who is a Team Manager at The Harbour, one of our hubs in the West of Surrey. Read Paula’s interview below to find out what she loves about her job, her one piece of advice, and much more.
Where did you learn Makaton?
I learnt Makaton at a previous job. We had a lot of Makaton users so I went on a training course, and I enjoyed it so much I followed the course right up the Level 9. I was even signed up to sign the Christmas Story at Winchester Cathedral in front of the entire Cathedral.
If you could give one piece of advice what would it be?
Since 2018, I have lost some loved ones. It has made me realise more than ever that you only have one life, so do not waste it. Yes there’s bills to be paid but if you want to see Gary Barlow 100 times, why not! There is some normality back to life now, enjoy it.
What is something people might not know about you?
I am always quite honest so people know most things about me. I would like people not to know I am scared of spiders because now when people find them they chase me around with them. I wish I had kept that one to myself!
What is the best social media account you follow?
Sharon and I both have a love of Take That, so I would have to say them. I actually follow Gary Barlow on Twitter and he follows me back!
What do you love most about working at The Harbour?
This month, I was promoted to become manager at The Harbour, so the past couple of months my role has changed completely. I have worked in care for 30 years so I almost feel like I am starting again, but I have liked learning new things every day. The thing that makes The Harbour so great for me is the amazing people we support and having such a good team
