Throughout the coronavirus pandemic we have continued to provide our services for the people we support in the community and online. As we moved out of lockdown we set up community bubbles so we can meet people face to face whilst following the government guidelines at all times.
Health and Wellbeing
Senior Activity Facilitator, Sarah Platt, set up a bubble to support people at Surrey Choices to stay fit and healthy. The group enjoyed ball games in the park and boccia on the green during the many weeks of good weather.
As the season changed to autumn, the weather became less accommodating for outside activities. The group decided to try Woking Leisure Centre so they could continue to stay fit and healthy through the colder months, and to feel more included in the community.
Woking Leisure Centre
Woking Leisure Centre felt safe and secure, hand gel was available throughout the centre as well as public information and guidance. The group was shown around by a coach who treated everyone with respect and listened to their individual needs before supporting people to choose which equipment they wanted to try.
Community Inclusion
This was a huge achievement for the people we support, because for some of them this was their first time in a gym. They were using the equipment just as anyone else would in an environment that was inclusive and friendly. Here are some of the things they said:
“I am using the normal gym just like my carer does”
“My brother will be so surprised when I tell him”
“I am so pleased to be getting some good exercise”
Well done to everyone involved!
