One of the people we support, Luke, has been interested in exercising in the countryside. Not only will this support his health and wellbeing, it will also provide Luke the opportunity to learn about the trees and habitats that surround him. This will support his vocational learning and work within The Growth Team.
Exercise and Vocational Learning
One of our colleagues from The Growth Team, Richard Lilley, has expert knowledge in the world around us. Whether that be woodland areas or the countryside, trees and plants he was the right person to support Luke on these weekly walks around Surrey.
During their two hour walk, Richard and Luke spotted a number of different birds and learnt about the different types of trees. At the end of the walk Luke bought himself a well earned hot chocolate. He is also eyeing up his next adventure and wants to see the sand pits where the martians landed in Wars of the Worlds.
Outcomes
The impact of these walks in the community have been good for Luke’s physical and mental wellbeing. They also provide an opportunity to learn something new about the nature we are surrounded by. Vocational learning is a huge part of The Growth Team Programme as it can lead to employment opportunities, volunteering and internships.
“I went for a walk this morning with Richard from the Growth Team on Horsell Common. We met at the Waterside Cafe, Heather Farm. We walked across the common to Fairoaks Airport, unfortunately the Hanger Cafe was closed. Along the way we saw a low flying buzzard, a number of other birds and Richard helped me to identify a number of trees including most importantly Blackthorn for the Sloe Berries for Sloe gin!” – Luke
