People supported by Farnham Community Group wanted to learn new skills, so they could independently enjoy amenities in their local town.
During their Person Centred Planning, each person explained how independent travel and doing things such as bowling and shopping were important to them. So, colleagues Becki Mitchell and Caroline Phipps worked with them to think about how they can achieve these goals.
In recent months, the group has taken it in turn to plan an outing for each other. They then go out and use public transport to get to where they have planned. This has involved learning many aspects of travel training and organisation skills, from understanding where to go to catch the correct bus, remembering the number of the bus, and managing money on transport and in shops.
“The group take part in a great variety of activities now by being able to go out into the town. They have all said that they like getting out and about. Using public transport makes them feel more independent.” Caroline Phipps
