Finalist in two categories of National Awards
The Learning Disabilities & Autism Awards offer a unique opportunity to celebrate the successes of individuals, teams and businesses in the learning disabilities and autism sector.
Surrey Choices has been shortlisted as a finalist in two categories. Dexter James has been shortlisted for Breaking down Barriers for his work with Positive Choices, our self-advocacy groups. Surrey Choices, as an organisation, has been shortlisted for Employer of People with a Disability award for good practice relating to employing people with learning disabilities and autism.
Judging days took place over Zoom at the end of September. As part of the process Dexter James was interviewed about his monthly Positive Choices sessions, currently held on Zoom. A big focus was placed on co-production, the use of accessible formats, and the people we support being enabled to deliver their own presentations in diverse ways.
Employment Support Specialist, Rubens King, supported Christina Earl during the other 30-minute judging interview. He talked about his experiences of starting with Surrey Choices, having a buddy and supportive line manager to help him become established. In addition, he described how he supports a range of people into work, and how being autistic can be a real strength in this role to provide the same quality service he would expect.
The Gala Awards Ceremony will be held on Friday 29 October and we will be sure to let everyone know how we get on.
