Growing independence by making their own meals
Many people at The Harbour wanted to develop their independence by cooking meals for themselves. Supported by Surrey Choices colleague, Cheryl Knight, the group focused on meal planning, shopping and preparing their own lunches.
They have run cooking sessions together before, but this time they focused more on the benefits and independence of making your own lunch.
The group have all cooked before and each have their own skills. Melissa is good at cracking eggs without getting any shell into the mixture, Gareth is good at stirring the mixture, Tim really likes to chop, Sharon enjoys rolling out pastry and Sophie likes to taste the result, particularly if its chocolate flavour. She also enjoys pushing the trolley in the supermarket.
The group have different strengths and require varying levels of support. Together they all learnt new skills and enjoyed a home cooked lunch which they made themselves.
This is an ongoing project as they are all continuing to grow their cooking skills, by making a variety of foods such as, sandwiches, pizzas, chocolate mug cakes and pasties.
The group are all very proud of their achievements. Cheryl commented:
“Everyone enjoyed participating and eating their lunch, particularly Gareth who really enjoyed making his Sandwich.” – Cheryl Knight
