Surrey Choices Menopause Workplace Pledge
Surrey Choices has signed the Menopause Workplace Pledge and is committed to supporting women in the workplace. Women make up nearly half of the UK workforce, but many feel forced to reduce their hours at work, pass up promotions and even quit their jobs due to lack of menopause support.
Surrey Choices has joined more than 1,700 employers, including the BBC, Tesco and Royal Mail, in signing the pledge. Surrey Choices Managing Director, Mette Le Jakobsen was delighted to sign the pledge:
“My vision for signing the Menopause Pledge is that it will enable colleagues across Surrey Choices to learn together and to develop skills and confidence. Our workforce is diverse but predominantly female, with a large proportion of women in the relevant age group, so this is an important part of our commitment to equality and inclusion. It is important that men as well as women in the workplace increase their awareness of the impact that the menopause can have on women, and that as supportive organisation, we get confident and comfortable talking about the menopause. I want Surrey Choices to be a safe place for women to talk about their experience of the menopause, where managers are equipped to provide support. The subject of menopause awareness was raised earlier in the year by a colleague during an all-staff engagement event and it is fantastic to be able to take an idea like this forward. We will start by providing training to managers early in the new year so that we can get the conversation started. “
If people affected by menopause feel supported at work, it can help to increase staff retention, reduce recruitment costs, improve productivity, and most importantly improve wellbeing, whilst supporting a more diverse workforce.
In signing the Menopause Workplace Pledge, Surrey Choices has committed to:
- Recognising that the menopause can be an issue in the workplace and that women may need support
- Talking openly, positively and respectfully about the menopause
- Actively supporting and informing employees affected directly or indirectly by the menopause
