Try a Train Initiative with Future Choices
Chloe and Kerryanne are part of the Future Choices programme. The two young ladies are good friends and wanted to increase their independence and travel safely with one another. This is because they want to be able to go to new places together and do the things they enjoy.
To learn how to travel safely, they met with the Education Officer and North Downs Line Officer for Southeast Communities Rail Partnership at Farnborough Train Station for their Try a Train initiative.
The Try a Train programme aims to introduce young people to train travel, providing an opportunity for those who lack confidence travelling by train to visit a train station and to experience a train journey for free.
Aspects of the Try a Train experience included how to buy a ticket at the ticket office, using the ticket machines as well as buying tickets online or on the app. Chloe and Kerryanne also met members of the train and station staff team, they learned where to go for help, and then took an accompanied train trip from Farnborough North to Guildford.
The ladies also learned about using the train service app to book tickets, find their train platform and keep up to date with live train information such as whether there are any delays. The Education Officer tailored the experience to the needs of Chloe and Kerryanne, pointing out how to read the departures and arrivals boards, how to use the information points, use the gate line and understand the signs on the train and around the station.
“Chloe and Kerryanne had a great day despite the 30 degree heat!. They both learned a lot about how to travel by train.” Lizzie Ayres, Employment Support Specialist
