Employment Support – EmployAbility and Partnership Working
Surrey Choices work in partnership with a number of schools and colleges across Surrey and it’s borders supporting student into work experience placements including our Surrey Choices’ Woodwork Project. Surrey Choices Employment and Communities Team, EmployAbility, offer career guidance and work with both the student and their tutors to find placements which supports their learning pathways. Support is then offered throughout the placements to ensure a successful placement for all.
One of the colleges that EmployAbility work with is Farnborough College of Technology. They work with the students and their tutors to understand their aspirations and skills and to look for opportunities to gain employment skills through work experience placements. This partnership allows students to start their employment pathway at transition age so that they get the best possible start in their employment pathway.
The Work Experience Placement at The Woodwork Project
Seven Students from the college were identified to attend a six week placement in Surrey Choices’ Woodwork Project. The Woodwork project is just one of Surrey Choices Getting Ready for Work Projects which are offered across Surrey for those with support needs. The project, based in Guildford, offers training in upcycling and recycling furniture and teaches practical carpentry skills.
The placement with the Woodwork Project is to give the students the opportunity to experience a working environment and to gain practical woodwork skills. The students made door wedges and 3D name plaques from recycled wood. To create the name plaques they cut out letters, sanded them to ensure they had no rough edges, arranged them on a background piece of wood, glued then down and then they had the opportunity to paint of vanish them.
Doug Crosby, Activity Facilitator, said
‘It is great to be able to teach the students skills which will help them on their employment journeys and to see their passion for woodwork. The Woodwork Project is a great first step for the students to learn vital skills to prepare for work. We hope to be able to offer this experience to more students and continue our partnership with Farnborough College of Technology ’’
