Surrey Choices’ Vocational Projects service helps people with disabilities transition to meaningful volunteer and work placements. By building confidence, independence and employability, this service enables individuals to contribute their unique skills to the workforce, benefiting both them and the organisations they work with.
Lee, a 38-year-old gentleman with Autism and Epilepsy, has thrived since joining Surrey Choices. Through tailored support and work experiences, Lee has discovered new opportunities, developed skills and built relationships, improving his quality of life.
Exploring New Opportunities
Lee’s weekly activities are diverse and enriching. He works with the Growth Team outdoors and enjoys social sessions organised by the Camberley Community Group, including bowling, gym, cooking and swimming. Although Lee lives in supported residential accommodation, he remains close to his family and often visits them.
With some support, Lee is independent in many daily tasks. His adventurous nature and eagerness to try new things led him to pursue vocational volunteering, which has had a positive impact on his life.
Thriving in Voluntary Work
Lee currently volunteers at Hullabaloo in Camberley, a dynamic space combining a salon, boutique, café and other services. It provides a perfect environment for Lee to grow personally and professionally.
At Hullabaloo, Lee takes pride in tidying tables, chairs, and plants, showing attention to detail and commitment. His work contributes to the welcoming atmosphere of the place, building his confidence and sense of purpose. Lee is also interested in expanding his role, particularly in the bar area, with plans to support him in this new opportunity.
Building Relationships and Confidence
One of the best parts of Lee’s placement is the friendships he has formed with his colleagues. His friendly and positive attitude has made him a valued team member. Lee takes pride in his work and his uniform, which gives him a sense of belonging and achievement.
The supportive environment at Hullabaloo helps reduce Lee’s anxiety, providing a meaningful connection to the workforce and balancing his week.
Looking Ahead
Lee’s time at Hullabaloo is just the beginning of his vocational journey. With ongoing support, he is ready to explore other settings like shops, cafés and kitchens, expanding his skills and independence. His story highlights the importance of tailored opportunities and support in helping individuals lead fulfilling, empowered lives.
