Join Shared Lives Week from Monday 17 – Friday 21 June 2019! This week, we are celebrating the amazing work that Shared Lives Carers all over the country do, as well as the teams of people who support them, like our very own Shared Lives team here at Surrey Choices. Make sure you follow our social media accounts to see the latest updates from the team during Shared Lives Week. Ever wanted to know what a day as a Shared Lives person looks like? Read the story below to find out!
How many times a week do you stay at your Shared Lives home?
I am with my Shared Lives family 7 days a week.
What is your favourite thing about staying with your Shard Lives family?
The best thing about my Shared Lives family is that they are so loving and caring towards me. I have always felt like a part of the family since I moved in with them!
What helped you adjust to your new home?
When I moved in, my Shared Lives family asked me how I wanted my new bedroom decorated. I was able to choose the colours of the walls, what I wanted inside my room and the bed linen… I love my room! This was really nice because making the room my own really helped me feel at home too.
What do you hope to get out of staying with your Shared Lives family?
I hope to be able to grow into a more independent person. I would like to gain security, safety, protection and a family which I have already have since living here.
Can you tell us something you have learnt since staying at your Shared Lives home?
I have learnt a lot of everyday skills from cleaning to cooking, which has given me a real boost in confidence.
Have you met any other family or friends of your Shared Lives family?
Yes lots of them! I am always really happy to see other family members when they come by to visit, as well as family friends who feel just like part of the family as well.
Is there anything you do regularly together?
We always go to all of my medical appointments together, from GP visits to the dentist, as well as social outings like going to the cinema, the theatre, day trips to the beach, walks along the canal and more!
Can you tell us something you have in common with your Shared Lives Carers?
We all love caring for the birds in our garden. I help them change the feeders with seeds and nuts, and I help to clean out the bird baths weekly to make them nice again for the birds.
Would you recommend the Shared Lives Scheme to someone who needs support?
Yes I definitely would. Shared Lives has given me the family I would never have had. I have grown so much in myself, learnt many life skills and always feel so loved and well looked after with my Shared Lives Family.
