Supported Internships Give Neurodivergent Young People the Chance to Shine – Bringing Benefits to Business and Society
Surrey Choices’ groundbreaking Supported Internship programme for young people not in employment, education or training (NEET) aged 16–24 without an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) has relaunched, offering a lifeline to those who too often fall through the cracks.
Last year’s pilot proved transformative: 100% of participants progressed into employment, further education, or training. Beyond the statistics, the programme has opened doors to brighter futures, helping young people grow in confidence, build friendships, and develop independence.
Without such opportunities, many face a very different reality – isolation at home, declining mental health, and limited prospects. But with the right mentoring, support, and employer partnerships, their talents shine and deliver huge value not only to themselves but also to the businesses and communities they join.
Real Impact: Young People Thriving
- Harry, a young man with autism, struggled with exams but dreamed of working in fitness. With support, he is working towards his Personal Trainer qualification, secured paid work at a gym, built friendships, and now travels independently.
- Amaan, once caught up with the wrong crowd, achieved his SIA license through the programme. He is now working at events, building positive networks and a brighter future.
- Maxi, a carer for his mother and sister, joined the programme and within six weeks secured a paid job at Nando’s. He is flourishing in his role and aspires to become a chef.
