Choices Waves

Choices Waves is an exciting broadcasting station that supports people to learn skills for employment. Staff do this by creating podcasts and music shows to be broadcast on the Choices Waves Mixcloud.

The service involves group and individual virtual sessions to gain new skills and learn about how shows are produced, edited and then broadcast. The service supports people to connect with a wider community and develop confidence in different situations. It also improves communication and presentation skills which are transferable to other working environments.

Other skills include:

  • Learning how to problem solve and overcome barriers.
  • Developing people’s digital skills and knowledge.
  • Supporting people to learn about what is going on in the world.

Surrey Voices Podcast

The new podcast, Surrey Voices, which is written and produced by disabled people, launched in March 2022. The show discusses disability issues and the achievements of people who are supported at Surrey Choices.

People we support are involved in all aspects of production. Finding interviewees, conducting interviews, researching topics and chasing down contributors – lots of soft skills. Also, learning the software which we use to produce the podcast, as well as developing skills used in audio recording, editing and mixing.

The show is made up of a number of segments like  ‘Choices Voices’ where they get opinions of people we support, based on questions that our listeners send in. For example, do disabled people see people like themselves on TV? Or does pineapple belong on pizza? In the ‘Above and Beyond’ section, someone says thanks to a person or place which regularly helps them in their daily life.
