Our Individual Spotlight is on Toby, who is on our Employment Works for Autism Programme. In his Spotlight, Toby opens up about his employment journey, the skills he has learnt, and his new job. Read his interview below:
What made you join the Employment Works for Autism programme? (EW4A)
I was ready to have some support to find a paid job so I could earn some money whilst also continuing my volunteering roles.
Where do you volunteer and what do you do there?
I volunteer at the Mole Valley Skills Hub doing admin tasks, meeting and greeting service users. I also volunteer with Centre for International Learning and Leadership (CILL), a Youth Organisation, teaching young people with learning disabilities life skills.
How did you prepare for job hunting?
I thought about the type of places I would enjoy working and began looking online at career sites. The EW4A programme helped to improve my communication skills through practice interviews and telephone calls.
After some successful interviews, where were you offered a job?
I am now working at Scattergood’s, a Catering Agency based in Guildford, for roughly 2 to 3 days a week. My role is a kitchen porter. I get to work in different schools.
What has been a positive impact since starting your job at Scattergood’s?
I have a more structured working week and the role has given me more confidence.
What skills have you learnt in your new job?
I have learnt lots about food hygiene and safety, following guidelines and regulations. My responsibilities are to wash pots and pans, keep the floors clean and sanitise food preparation areas.
