The Celebrating Success Awards highlight the achievements of people supported by Surrey Choices. The judging panel was comprised of disabled people and colleagues from Surrey Choices. They were impressed by how each of the winners had overcome challenges, achieved new goals and were inspired by the way they demonstrated the values at Surrey Choices.
Employment Volunteering and Vocational Learning
For the Employment Volunteering and Vocational Learning award judges were looking for Individuals who:
- Have been or are currently on a journey toward employment
- Have achieved in the workplace
- Managed challenges at work
The Nomination
Andrew had worked as bank staff in the Porter’s Department of St Peter’s Hospital for the last 12 years. His goal has always been to have a permanent job at the hospital.
Each time there was a vacancy for the permanent porter’s role he applied but was not successful. Last summer, the role came up again and he jumped at the chance to apply. He worked hard to prepare for the interview.
His efforts paid off and this time he was offered the permanent role. He is very pleased with this outcome. Being employed gives him job security and additional benefits.
The judges the fact that he never gave up on his dream job and thought that he shows true courage and bravery to keep on trying. The hard work paid off, as he beat 22 other candidates who were interviewed for the role. This person’s story is inspirational.
The Impact
After finding out he had won the award Andrew said:
“I could not believe it when I was told I won the award”
