Celebrating Success
The Celebrating Success Awards highlight the achievements of people supported by Surrey Choices. The judging panel was comprised of disabled people and colleagues from Surrey Choices. They were impressed by how each of the winners had overcome challenges, achieved new goals and were inspired by the way they demonstrated the values at Surrey Choices.
Independent Living and Life Skills
For the Independent Living and Life Skills award judges were looking for Individuals who:
- Have worked hard to have a more independent lifestyle
- Gained confidence to overcome challenges
- Made a positive different to their life
The Nomination
Mark wanted to be able to travel independently and manage his money. He was supported by staff to break down the individual tasks and worked on them until he was ready to move onto the next task. Now, for the first time in his life he has been able to travel without assistance. From taking himself to the station, buying a train ticket from a machine, using the correct platform, opening the train door and importantly getting off at the right station and finding the exit. He is so happy and proud of himself.
The judges thought this was a good example of setting a goal and then following a plan to get there. He kept practicing each step of his journey with help, until he felt confident to travel on his own.

After finding out that he had won Mark said:
