Communicating through Postcards of Kindness
Clare is deaf and finds herself feeling very isolated and anxious from meeting new people, as she is worried about someone not being able to understand her or able to communicate with others outside of her support network who do not use British Sign Language.
To increase her confidence, Clare was really eager to find some new ways to talk to people so she feels less lonely and can socialise more. She has learnt to use her mobile phone to text and message her friends and family which has been a huge boost.
Together, Clare and colleagues worked to find some new ways in which Clare can communicate with people. She is a very artistic person and so becoming part of the Postcards of Kindness project was perfect for Clare. Postcards of Kindness is a pen pal scheme where people write or draw to one another who may be lonely to improve their wellbeing and meet new people. She has been spending time creating a range of postcards for people; some she knows well and was confident in writing to them and some people she did not know, but still wanted to connect with them and spread some happiness.
“Clare recently received a beautiful butterfly postcard back from someone she has been writing too. She was so surprised and pleased to see someone had written back to her, she had a great big smile on her face. She has made another friend and she has proved to herself that she can make new friends and communicate with them in a creative way”. Nikki Rutter, Service Coordinator
