The progression of Short Breaks Banstead
Short Breaks Banstead provides overnight stays for disabled and autistic adults.
The different options include:
- Regular overnight stays throughout the year
- Block stays for a set period
- Emergency care and support for: – Those who are coming out of hospital and need additional support – When there is an incident at home and support cannot be provided e.g. someone has a fall – When circumstances change at home and more support is needed e.g. behavioural needs
We support people to have a positive experience whilst providing breaks for family Carers. The Short Breaks service is just a short walk from Banstead town centre with lots of amenities and attractions nearby. We have six bright, modern bedrooms, an accessible kitchen and bathrooms, and areas to relax in including a large sensory garden. The property is wheelchair accessible throughout.
Looking back
Karen O’Neill is the Registered Manager at Short Breaks Banstead and has seen a lot of progress over the last year.
Short Breaks have come along so far over the past year, with occupancy almost doubled. We have regular use of the Surrey Choices’ minibuses, which enable us to plan many exciting trips out.
Colleague engagement and enthusiasm has grown incredibly which is great to see. We are now able to make use of the garden, which was a blank canvas and has now been turned into a sensory garden with plenty of opportunities for all to use. We have a new trampoline, swing, and planters.
In the community, people we support have started going to the local church and getting involved in events in the village. We are traveling to lots of attractions such as zoos, the Sealife centre, local swimming pools and so much more. Short Breaks has a very happy environment and people are thriving, everyone is given the opportunity to participate in what we do.
Impact
Short Breaks Banstead have planned more trips across different environments such as beaches, amusement parks, lavender fields, and leisure centres. These stimulating environments have already shown the increase of social interaction, confidence and happiness in people whilst providing crucial breaks for family Carers.
