Learning Car Maintenance at Longmead
Members of the EmployAbility team in the East area of Surrey Choices began running car maintenance sessions during 2021 at Longmead Community Hub. The sessions are for young people on our Future Choices programme.
Colleagues sharing their knowledge
With Team Manager, David’s guidance and existing car knowledge, alongside the extended support from Employment Support Specialist, Phil, individuals have learnt how to complete basic car maintenance.
Problem solving with peers
Many of us will pay a mechanic to perform routine maintenance on our vehicles, but vehicle owners can learn to do many of the simple tasks themselves to save money and learn valuable skills. So young people attending the car maintenance sessions have been shown how to:
- Change the oil
- Replace air and oil filters
- Safely jack up a car
Actively engaging with all tasks, the group have changed front brakes, swapped front suspension struts and removed the wheels from the car.
In addition these sessions have enabled all to experience team working and problem solving with their peers. Moreover these are soft skills that employers are looking for when recruiting.
David and Phil hope to offer more of these sessions throughout 2022.
