Colleague Spotlight: Gary
Our Colleague Spotlight feature is on Gary who is a Senior Digital Facilitator. Read Gary’s interview below to find out what he enjoys about his job, what he does in his spare time and much more.
When did you join the Surrey Choices team?
It will be two years in November 2021.
What made you want to work in Adult Social Care?
It was my sister who said I would be best suited due to my personality. I had been working on and off in social care and the NHS for a while. When I was working as a Personal Trainer at Woking Leisure Centre, I helped train people from Surrey Choices in the gym. One of these people happened to be Dexter James and another gentleman with Cerebral palsy. Working with them made me realise how much I missed working in social care. I joined Surrey Choices and the rest is history!
What keeps you motivated each day?
Knowing that today is a new day. No matter how big or how small, you can make a difference.
What is your most memorable achievement at Surrey Choices so far?
It has to be helping to get the virtual session online and on the website during the pandemic. So special thanks to Chi, Adam and Paddy for helping with this, and Simon for creating the booking system.
What job roles have you had at Surrey Choices?
I started as an Activity Facilitator based at The Harbour. It was a great experience with a great team.
How have you seen the digital side of Surrey Choices grow?
It has grown a lot not just for the people we support, but also for colleagues. The growth of the Digitiser project, the start of the virtual program. It is only the beginning as well. Hopefully there will be more to come in the future.
What is something you look forward to seeing over the next year?
I am looking forward to seeing Community Choices in full swing and Surrey Choices working as one organisation. Seeing the development of the virtual and digital offerings. This will be for colleagues, people we support, families and Carers.
What is your favourite thing to do outside of work?
I like playing lots of different games and I have streamed on Twitch. I play guitar and listen to music. I spend time with family and friends. I like going to zoos and wildlife parks. I have two rabbits, Willow and Pepper who always keep me on my toes. My sister’s Dogs Orla and Aylish are my work buddies.
