Colleague Spotlight: Janet

Our Colleague Spotlight feature is on Janet who is an Employment Support Specialist. Read Janet’s interview below to find out what she enjoys about her job, what she does in her spare time and much more.

When did you join the Surrey Choices team?

I began my role in October 2020 after my son was being supported by EmployAbility. I was approached by people who are now my colleagues, asking if I would be interested in applying for an Employment Support Specialist role

What is your favourite thing about your job?

I am a parent of four boys, three of whom were diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder. I enjoy being able to help parents when they no longer know what to do or where to go anymore as I have done the same for my sons. I enjoy being able to help people and their families grow on their journey, become independent and achieve paid employment outcomes!

What has been a really enjoyable job you supported someone into?

I helped a colleague with someone they supported, alongside someone I supported, to complete their Level 1 Football Coaching certification. I am a Football Coach and so I was able to use my skills and knowledge to navigate these two people through their course.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I am Chairman of Battlebridge Football Club and I also coach our adult disability teams, located in Redhill.

Can you tell us a bit more about Battlebridge and your work there?

Battlebridge Football Club was set up after I saw a gap in the market for young disabled people to have a Football Club they belonged to.

How long have you been a Football Coach for?

I have been a Football Coach for almost 20 years. I support people to learn football skills and become qualified coaches at Battlebridge.

Have any of the people supported by Surrey Choices joined Battlebridge?

The two people I supported with their coaching course have now successfully qualified. I get lots of enquiries all the time about people we support who are interested in either playing football or the coaching side of football.
