Our Colleague Spotlight feature is on Kaz Robinson, who is one of our Community Support Workers at Surrey Choices. Read her interview below to learn what she loves about her job, creative sessions and much more!
What do you most love about your job?
The people I work with! I work with an amazing staff team who always support each other. I have been here for over 20 years and from day one my priority has always been to make sure the people I support go home at the end of the day happy and with a smile on their face.
Can you tell us about your famous sensory sessions?
I cater for different abilities and work around what people like and dislike and their individual needs. I get involved with them to do the tasks, like taking our shoes and socks off to feel the sand on our feet. We take for granted something so small but for some people they do not know what it is I like to walk on the beach. I love the variety of what we do in these sessions. It is all about people experiencing a smell, touch, or sound.
What difference do you see these sessions having on people?
It is all about the reactions you get; a giggle, a smile. I receive lovely emails and comments from parents and Carers about how much the sessions make a difference.
Where do you get inspiration for your creative sessions?
I spend a lot of time on TikTok and Google! Sometimes the ideas just come to me and I run with them. I am in my element with some glitter.
What would you say to staff interested in exploring new activities to support people?
I would say go for it! You never know unless you try. I am always more than happy to help or listen to ideas.
What three words would your friends and family use to describe you?
Crazy, fun, and loving!
