Creating Meaningful Relationships at Work

David has been with the same employer for over 20 years. He was off sick from work for about a year due to hip problems and he went back in 2023. His employer has been very supportive and made reasonable adjustments for David to return to work safely, they even visited David at his supported living home while he was off work.

Here is what the employer said to us about David:
“David comes to us once a week for a few hours and supports us in the administration of our services by doing various office tasks. He is always so proud that he is the only one who can laminate or bind documents in the neatest way, and he is right! When David was off work we missed him terribly, but since his return he has been bringing the fun back into those few hours that he is with us. We visited him during his recovery and agreed with his doctor when he was well enough to return. We had also moved offices in that time and we invited David for a visit to see the new office and make sure he was comfortable with coming back to work in our new environment.

To reflect David’s mobility, we arranged the desk and his work around him so as to reduce the amount of walking he has to do. Working with Surrey Choices has been so easy, and they have supported us and David with his work. Recently, Surrey Choices colleagues visited our new office to ensure that all reasonable adjustments had been made, and recommended where we could improve things for David. All the colleagues at First Community really do value David’s input; not just his work but his sense of humour and his kindness too. He really does light up the office when he comes to work”.
