Through the Surrey Choices EmployAbility service, earlier this year Dermot was supported into securing his dream job working at Chessington World of Adventures Resort!
Dermot joined the team at Chessington World of Adventures in February 2019, where he had roughly four weeks of training before the Resort opened in March for the first time in 2019. Within a month of working, Dermot was awarded the ‘Rides Star of the Month’ employee award which recognises the hard work of employees at Chessington World of Adventures.
Carolyn Tucker, Dermot’s Employment Support Specialist spoke of Dermot’s hard work and how much of a dedicated employee he is.
In the few months that Dermot has been working at Chessington World of Adventures, he as really excelled and grown into his role. The first phase included weeks of training before the park opened due to the seasons they operate. Dermot was fantastic at greeting customers and ensuring the environment was a happy place for everyone.
In recent weeks, Dermot has taken on further training to understand what to do in the event of a fire. This involved learning where the fire exits are and how to get himself, customers and colleagues to safety. Due to the Resort having animals who could be a danger if they escape, Dermot has also learned the protocol for what to do in the event of an animal escaping.
Dermot has built great relationships with his colleagues at the resort. Everyone says hello to him whilst working and he loves being able to talk to the general public each day.
As another staff incentive, employees are given ‘gold stars’, once a certain number of them are received they are then entitled to attend an annual staff event. Employees can also be given ‘golden envelopes’ which have an exciting gift inside to recognise and celebrate their brilliant work. Just last week Dermot received two golden envelopes!
