Our Good News Story feature will give you the chance to learn more about the individuals we support and see why our colleagues love working in care each day. Read our first story from Gina, who attends the Woking Resource Centre here at Surrey Choices.
My name is Gina, I have a hearing loss and go to the Woking Resource Centre for support. A few years ago I wanted to start something to help me interact with others as well as learn new skills. The Surrey Choices Woking Resource Centre has enabled me to achieve some of my goals, by continuing to support me to meet new people and expand the furniture project.
I have been doing the Furniture Project at Woking Resource Centre for about five years now. I started it because it was a very interesting project for me and I enjoy being pro-active.
Since getting involved in this project, I have refurbished around 140 pieces of furniture including chests of drawers, mirrors and tables. I enjoy upcycling them to find them a new home which also means I am acting sustainably, helping to recycle products that are no longer wanted into something fresh and new.
When I complete a piece of furniture, I sell the product on or if it is something that has been purposely brought in for me to refurbish I give it back to the customer who pays me for my work. All of the money earned goes back into this project so I can purchase more materials and please more customers.
I really enjoy seeing my finished products. It gives me a real sense of achievement when I see the owners faces when they collect their finished piece of furniture.
I hope to be able to continue doing this project for many more years as it makes me and others really happy.
