Robert is supported by our EmployAbility team. Read his interview below to find out what he is achieving with Surrey Choices and his experience being LGBTQ+ and autistic in the workplace.
How long have you been working with Surrey Choices?
I started working with Surrey Choices in August 2015, and without them I would not have entered the world of work. Getting a job gave me a lot more confidence, and earning money gave me more independence. I never thought I would get a paid job, but I am so glad I did.
What is something you are really proud of?
I am proud of the person I have grown into: being LGBTQ+, having autism, having a job. I am proud of what I have achieved and the person I have become.
Last year you shared your story with us about coming out at work. How did coming out at work impact you?
People were very supportive and whilst it was scary, once everyone knew I felt relieved. I can now speak openly about the person I am and talk to my colleagues about my partner. I think it has improved my mental health as have more freedom to be myself.
What is one thing you wish everyone would know about being LGBTQ+?
We fall in love the same as a straight person does; we are all the same
How can people be more inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community?
Treat LGBTQ+ people exactly the same as everybody else. Everyone has the right to be treated equally
What would you say to someone who is questioning their sexuality, or nervous to come out at work?
Take time to let your sexuality develop. There is no rush and it is important that you feel comfortable, there is no time frame to come out. Most people are lovely, but if someone does not support you, they are the one with the problem, there is nothing wrong with you.
