Our Guildford Community Group are celebrating after receiving an award for their service to the community.
The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Nigel Manning, honoured the group with The Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community 2018. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of 20 people who were nominated by residents in the borough.
Since September 2016, the North Guildford Community Warden Team has been working with a group from Surrey Choices to undertake the upkeep and management of the local community notice boards.
The Guildford Community Group, who all have a wide range of disabilities, keep the notice boards up to date on a weekly basis, which allows residents and tenants to receive regular updates on matters that are arising in their local community. They also take part in litter picks to help keep the local area clean and tidy. Garry Jones, community warden at Guildford Borough Council, nominated the group for the Mayor’s award.
The group were delighted to receive the award. Surrey Choices customer, Renny Skinner, who is a member of the Guildford Community Group, said: “I like my certificate. I met the Mayor and I said hello and thank you.”
Jessica Williams for Surrey Choices, commented: “The Guildford Community Group consistently go above and beyond to keep local residents up to date with events in their community, so it’s great that they’ve been recognised with this fantastic award.”
“The engagement with the local community has helped the team members to increase their own personal confidence as well as building on their teamwork skills. The skills they learn whilst working as volunteers with the group will help them to continue on their own employment pathway in the future.”
Surrey Choices provides a wide range of employment and community support, enabling adults with support needs or disabilities to gain independence and learn skills that will help them find paid or voluntary work.
