Taking Action
Nicola from Longmead Community Hub and Kimberley from Shared Lives attended the Learning Disability England (LDE) conference on ‘Action Towards Good Lives’ in London. They travelled up on the train with Phil Mack, and the three of them worked together to agree the best way to get there. They treated themselves to a taxi from London Bridge to the conference venue as they were running late, with the driver pointing out lots of the landmarks as they drove along.
In the morning, Nicola chose for the group to attend a workshop on Planning Ahead to build Good Lives, around the Thinking Ahead resources. These are Person Centred Planning type resources and are free to download from their website. Kimberley spoke up in the meeting saying what she liked about the materials. After lunch, Kimberley chose the Health Inequalities workshop by the ProActive Community for the three to attend. This included a discussion about a charter for taxis to treat people with needs fairly. In the final section of the day, people had the chance to say how they were taking ‘Action towards Good Lives’ and the group spoke up about the staff training videos and interview panels.
Kimberley said “It was an amazing experience to meet with other people and talk about issues affecting people with learning disabilities” and Nicola agreed, saying “It was good taking part in the workshops”.
