Our Colleague Spotlight feature is on Rachel Britton who is one of our Senior Employment Support Specialist at Surrey Choices. Read her interview below to learn about her goals, favourite moments in the job, and much more.
How long have you worked at Surrey Choices?
I started in January 2021 as an Employment Support Specialist (ESS) in West EmployAbility. In November 2022, I was promoted to Senior with the Local Supported Employment (LSE) programme. As a Senior, I do assessments of referrals and support ESSs with their customers, as well as having my own customers.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really enjoy networking because I love talking to people. I have actually found it easier in this role, maybe because people take me more seriously now I have ‘Senior’ in my job title.
What is the most interesting thing you have done with Surrey Choices?
It is hard to pinpoint one thing, but I find going to events one of the most interesting parts of my role. I really enjoy those moments when I am talking to someone about what we do and why we do it and see them start to care about it too. Before Surrey Choices I had no experience working with disabled people but now I am fully invested.
What advice would you give to a new Employment Support Specialist?
Remember that even though we do a lot of lone working, your team are always there to help.
What do you like doing outside of work?
I am a girl’s guide leader and spend most of my spare time doing things for this. I was a brownie when I was younger, then became a guide and never left! I took over my unit when I was 17 years old and love it.
