Colleagues Ashley Jones and Clare Birkett run a Speaking Up group each week, which empowers people to advocate for themselves. The session was moved onto Zoom last year due to the pandemic.
The most recent topic the group wanted to focus on was bullying and hate crime. People in the group said they had experienced this and wanted to share information to keep their peers safe. After liaising with Positive Choices Coordinator, Dexter James, this has now led to the group presenting their work in the upcoming Positive Choices meetings to a larger audience.
The Speaking Up group have learnt a lot from each other whilst creating their presentation. They have all shown great empathy to each individual’s experience with bullying. The group have created a supportive space to discuss their feelings and opinions.
“It has been inspiring to watch people support each other in working out strategies for minimising and or dealing with bullying situations. Some people have been especially vocal about their opinions on the subject. They are so passionate about supporting one another with bullying and vulnerability.” – Ashley Jones, Activity Facilitator
