Stuart steps out of his comfort zone
Stuart has autism and has never wanted to do any activities different to his timetable, because structure and routine is really important to him.
One of his favourite hobbies is playing chess. He loves tactical games and to challenge himself and his opponent.
Colleagues at Nexus saw a community games group in Egham and thought it would be an excellent opportunity for Stuart to play his favourite game in a different location, and to meet new people to play with.
With their support, Stuart agreed to try it out the games group and it was a huge success! He really enjoyed attending and expressed he was “very happy to be playing chess with other people and trying to beat them.” He has been a number of times since and looks forward to going back.
Colleague Claire Sargeant told us
“Stuart has surprised me by attending this games group more than once. It took him a lot to come out of his comfort zone and the reward is amazing. It is nice to see him playing chess with other people other than staff or other people at Nexus.”
